My “Less-Toxic” Shopping Process + Tips for Yours | Collab w/ Naturally Ashlynne

I recently had a few special events to prepare for and noticed that several of my current makeup products were getting a little crusty and I didn’t actually have a few things I needed. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I haven’t done any serious makeup shopping in over a year, so this was an exciting yet daunting prospect for me. So, since I actually ended up enjoying the process, I wanted to share my adventure and some tips with you now.

Today’s post is a collab with Ashlynne from the Naturally Ashlynne blog, so make sure you check out her post as well and follow her! Here are all of her links…

Ashlynne’s website is gorgeous and she has such fabulous content (cleaning, homemaking, and lifestyle). She’s always so kind and is a fellow follower of Jesus Christ, so again, make sure you head over and give her a follow ASAP.

Okay, now, let’s get into some tips!

P.S. This is a bit of a prelude to a YouTube video I currently have in the works! I’m hoping to have it up soon, so the link will be available here as soon as it’s uploaded. Stay tuned and make sure you’re subscribed!

1. Know Before you Go

Maybe this is a corny title, but if it helps you remember what I’m about to say before you head out shopping, then it’s done its job.

Before doing my own ingredient research, I would go shopping and blindly choose what I thought was best or had the best reviews or the nicest packaging. When I go into a shopping session knowing what to look for, it helps me feel less stressed and more confident when I start to investigate those labels.

Whether you’re recently starting your “less-toxic” journey or not, it’s always important to begin or at least reevaluate your research before your next purchase(s). Doing this ahead of time will prevent you from having to scramble and try to do research while you’re actually in the store or having to guess at an ingredient you haven’t come across before.

If you’d like to do some research on nail polish, then please check out my “less-toxic” page if you need somewhere to start.

2. The EWG Skin Deep Feature

The EWG is something I find super helpful when researching cosmetic ingredients and it’s super quick to use while on-the-go. This website, the Environmental Working Group, has a huge database of products with scores from 1-10 based on what ingredients they include. I’ll show more of how I use this in my upcoming video, but mainly this is a great way to get a feel for unfamiliar ingredients and see which ones different products have in common.

Actually, that leads right to my final tip!

3. Compare and Contrast

Sometimes looking further than the first product you find can be really beneficial! On my recent makeup excursion, I found a setting spray I thought would be good and had it in hand. Then I was looking at some products from another “more natural” brand and found their setting spray as well. I researched both and decided that I preferred the ingredients in the spray from the first brand because it was more simplistic and had less add-ins.

Sometimes the best option may not always come from where you think it will, so make sure to shop around a bit to make sure you can find something you’ll be happy with.

I hope you found this blog post helpful! As always, you can learn so much and gain so much confidence by doing your own research and making a plan that works for you.
