"Nail" Year's Resolution...
Hey, Polished People! One of my 2018 resolutions is to take the month of January to care for my nails, so I'm going to be sharing updates with you all month long. On January 1st, I trimmed my nails, brushed them (explained later in this post), and moisturized them. It was kind of funny because I broke a nail just a couple minutes after midnight, so I figured, what better time to start. π Anyway, here's what I've been using to care for my nails so far...
Firstly, I'll explain the "brushing my nails" thing. I got a recommendation from a fellow nail artist (@rums2016) on Instagram to use whitening toothpaste to whiten my nails and rid them of staining, so I gave it a try and I really like the method. It's more gentle than professional whitening products and is a good way to cleanse your nails every so often. So I use a separate toothbrush and whatever toothpaste I'm using, and just "brush" my nails whenever they could use some whitening.
Moisturizing is also a priority of my nail care break this month, and my two favorite products for that are Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream and Mary Kay Satin Hands Nourishing Shea Hand Cream. If you've been on my blog recently, you've probably heard all about these products and I really enjoy using them. I've been using the cuticle butter every day for the last couple days, and I use the hand cream whenever I feel my hands could use the moisture.
Lastly, simple filing, buffing, and trimming is what else I'm doing this month. I trimmed and filed my nails the first day, and did some much-needed buffing. I don't recommend buffing or filing every day, because doing that too much can remove layers of your nail and make your nails thin and weak. I've had some roughness or peeling on my nails, so I've been trying to even those out while I grow them back out. I'm pretty sure I'll have to trim them again once they've grown out some more to get rid of the staining that'll have grown out as well. I'm very excited to see them back to normal at the end of this month (or so). Here's a before and after pic of my long nails and my short nails on January first:
